ABOUT ME
Chinese-born hornist Zhanglong (Ray) Wu is an enthusiastic freelance horn player in Vancouver. An active and avid chamber musician, Ray has collaborated with groups of all sizes and instrumentation, performing (and premiering) music ranging from the classical repertoire, contemporary avant-garde, world-jazz fusion, and film/video game score genres. Across western B.C and Boston. He has been played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Pops, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra(USA), and Fujian Symphony Orchestra(China).
As a soloist, Ray is a frequent recitalist and has performed Horn Concerto, Op.91(Glière Reinhold) with Quanzhou Symphony Orchestra in 2016. Ray is thankful to have received prizes, awards, and scholarships from the PRISMA Music Festival, Mannes School of Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and the University of British Columbia. He was also the brass winner of the Hong Kong International Youth Music Festival in 2014.
Equally passionate in teaching as he is performing, Ray works closely with students ranging from ages 9 to 65+. He currently teaches at several studios in the Vancouver and Richmond areas. He is currently a part of horn instructor at the St. George's School. He also coaches school band horns sections in clinics in the Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Vancouver areas.
Ray has a Graduated Performance Diploma in French horn performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and a Master of Music (Horn Performance) Degree from the University of British Columbia.
Extended summer studies have allowed him to work with: Richard “Gus” Sebring(Associate Principal horn from Boston Symphony Orchestra), Laurens Woudenberg(Principal horn from Concertgebouworkest), Oto Carrillo(Chicago symphony orchestra
), Fergus Mcwilliam(Berliner Philharmoniker), Yuqiang Dai, and Mengla Huang.
